AP考試中的美國歷史，有許多是需要大家理解，而不是死記硬背。考試中幾乎沒有考察背誦的內容，大部分都是考察學生對于美國社會發展的理解，考察學生是不是建立了完善的歷史觀。除此之外，美國歷史其實不管是在學生的申請中，還是未來在美國大學的學習中，都是非常有幫助的。
1、分析素材及證據的技能
包含：對原始素材和觀點的解釋，其中原始素材指written documents, maps, images, quantitative data, and works of art，評估素材和觀點的可信度和局限性；
對第二手素材和觀點的再次解讀，第二手素材指economists, sociologists, political commentators, or art historians著寫的觀點性的素材；
2、聯系和比較歷史的技能
包含：比較不同個體、事件、發展階段，分析其異同而得出對應的結論；站在廣博的歷史角度將事件與發展情境化；整合各種歷史信息；
3、按年代順序的論證技能
包含：不同時間順序的事件之間的因果關系；事件變化的連續性；事件獨立性特別性；
4、論據論證支持觀點的技能
尤其在材料題和論文中，要求有觀點且用論據論證去支持論點。

可以看到，官方給出的時間段會有重合，Period 4 從1800年開始，強調美國南北戰爭前的改革和社會變化，這個時間段以1848年的Seneca Falls Convention塞內卡福爾斯會議為結束標志。Period 5， 開始于1844年，側重“天命論”思想下的領土擴張如何引起更激烈的奴隸制問題，直至內戰結束和戰后重建。Period 6 從內戰結束的1865年開始到1898年的西班牙-美國戰爭結束。
建議考生仔細解讀一下建國綱領《獨立宣言》、《憲法》、《權利法案》、《聯邦黨人文集》，系統梳理每個時間段的重要事件，比如：

這本書就是College Board官方出版的，專門給大家講述美國歷史和世界歷史的準備方式的教材，這本書的最大賣點就是官方，里面的真題數量并不是特別多，但是好在能夠給大家一個機會，看看真考的題目的難度到底是怎樣的。
這本書就是最好最全的美國歷史備考教材，作為想要CR高分的同學的泛讀材料。但是這本書好, 大, 全的特點也讓這本書對于只需要參加SAT2考試而不是AP考試的同學覺得過于細節 建議大家可以仔細想想要不要使用這本教材，如果真的覺得太厚，可以用下面的那本美國歷史的Direct Hits和中文的一些美國歷史讀物來代替。
這本書，我覺得其實是這三本美國歷史教材中最有價值也是最有效率的一本，這本書的作者，就是SAT最好的單詞書Direct Hits的作者，Larry Krieger，他曾經參加過110次SAT考試，這么多的考試經歷讓他能夠觸摸到考試的細微變化，也讓他成為了全美最權威的SAT備考的Tutor，他本身的大學專業是History，所以他教授所有的SAT2和AP的歷史類課程，這本書可以說是他的心血之作，值得所有需要去參加美國歷史考試的同學仔細讀一讀。
