在SAT寫作中，考生需要在自己的essay中明確對應材料文作者的writing techniques in diction，從而進一步完善我們在寫作中對材料文進行分析的角度。我們首先以材料文「Viewpoint: Air-Conditioning Will Be the End of Us」的Paragraph 4為例，破解寫作范文的一個段落：

Techniques in wording:
措辭	修辭	效果
igloo（冰窖）	exaggeration（夸張）	To an excessive extent AC is used.
artic（極寒的）	exaggeration（夸張）	To an excessive extent AC is used.
suicidal（自殺式的）	exaggeration（夸張）	The intimidating word is to deter residents from using AC excessively.
注意：Techniques區別于Strategy，內容分上的選擇，文章結構上的安排

In Paragraph 4,「前半部分techniques頻繁：the author deliberately exaggerates about the excessive use of AC in New York. In the description, the hyperbole—the diction of “igloos” and “artic air”—is yet accurate. The author then deems this way of using AC “suicidal”, and the intimidating word is to deter residents from using AC excessively. 「后半部分核心就是一個strategy：To further warn New Yorkers of the consequences of continuing using AC irresponsibly, the author makes an analogy in which the likely restraint on the use of AC is compared to the attempt to ban big soda. Since New Yorker resisted the big soda ban so hard, they would find it even more unacceptable to use AC under the government’s nanny-state guideline.我們再以材料文「How?to Increase the?Number?of Women Winning Nobel Prize」的Paragraphs 5-8（7和8的細節略）為例，破解寫作范文的一個段落：

「分析technique：When the author points out the high requirements of being a female Nobel winner, she emphasizes having “preternatural determination” as a critical trait in addition to high intelligence, which is taken-for-granted. The diction is obviously exaggerated, 分析technique」and represent the author’s intended meaning that females having?scientific pursuits must overcome the obstacles, from the culture, society and politics, that are as difficult and woefully adverse as the determination needs to be “preternatural”. The author then illustrates the difficulties by three examples from the three dimensions. Paragraph 6 is transition.?In?that paragraph,「分析technique：the rhetorical question is to stress the lack of legitimate reasons for the rarity of female Noble winners 分析technique」in the modern age when the Civil Right Act, affirmative action and Title IX have removed the obstacles It thus follows that institutions and federal agencies, as are named by the author, should take the responsibility to facilitate female scientists’ careers.
