眾人給沒看過《Rudy》(《追夢赤子心》)這部影片的 Jim 講述大家公認的最感人的一個情節。無論托福口語第一題還是雅思口語第二題,都要求考生描述一件事,所以練就描述一件事情的能力是考試必備技能。先看劇中這段一分鐘時長的劇情片段描述吧!
建議同學們計時讀一下,看看是否可以在一分鐘之內讀完,當前語速和正常美劇中人物的是否一致。
Listen up, because it's Rudy's last chance to dress for a game, NCAA rules only allow a certain number of players to be in a uniform, and everytime the list goes up, Rudy's name is left off if. And the list for the last game goes up and Rudy's name is left off it again.
Four years of futility.
First he's got up to make the grades to get in the school.
Then he's got to make the practice squad.
And he's getting creamed by guys twice his size.
But he didn't care cause it's all about the team and all he wants is to just once to be on the list to dress for a game.
And it's the last game of his last year of college and he's not on the list. So one by one the players came to the coach's office and put their jerseys down on the desk, and say " Coach, I want Rudy to take my place on Saturday." And there's a whole line snaking out of the coach's office of players holding their jerseys.
描述一件事情,言之有物并且有詞匯支持是前提,首選自己真實經歷回答,可好處是事物內在邏輯的一致性,回答連貫。
1)沒有特別長的句子,更沒有從句套從句,口語答案句子不宜過長,控制在 three clauses 之內。注意,句子長短和句式結構不是一回事,短句子依然可以結構多樣。
2)連詞可以使用較簡單的 and,but,so 等,而無需使用書面語氣十足的 nevertheless,therefore,consequently,moreover,furthermore 等。
3)在claim性質的內容后需要有解釋,即層級使用要正確,如 “Four years of futility”?一句,后面平行列舉出三個原因。形成一種排比的氣勢,這在英語口語中是比較常見的,考試時如果能使用排比句也是證明自己英語能力的一種有效手段。如劇中如下兩段對話中排比的運用。
場景一:
Don: How do you define "best"?
Mac: I define it by?the source. I define it by the number of relevant facts it contains, and I define it by an X factor that I trust Will and myself to determine, using our combined five decaces in the field.
場景二:
Will: Charlie, I understood the Tea Party in the beginning, just like I understood the SDS. The Tea Party was a middle-class movement responding spontaneously to bad trends--wages were stagnant, jobs were disappearing, Wall Street get trillions, and everybody was laughing at them.(請注意模仿劇中在說這段臺詞時的語氣)
4)引語的使用。如," Coach, I want Rudy to take my place on Saturday."。少用引語也是我們同學口語答案普遍現象,建議大家嘗試在答案中設計使用,同樣可以起到四兩撥千斤的作用。
