Olympic medalist Mckayla Maroney said Thursday that the abuse by Michigan sports doctor Larry Nassar “left scars on my psyche that may never go away.” The sentencing phase of his trial is in its third day of statements from young women abused by Nassar.

The Democrats and Republicans in Congress face off under threat of a government shutdown on Friday. Republicans say they are ready to pass a budget deal with funding for the Children’s Health Insurance program, but democrats say the bill was quickly thrown together and they suggest a solution that includes a DACA fix.

Prosecutors say the 13 children found chained up in California were put there as a punishment, and a 17-year-old plotted her escape for two years. The 13 victims were severely malnourished and allowed to shower only once a year. Parents David and Louise Turpin have been charged with torture and abuse.

Locals in Puerto Maldonado celebrated the Pope’s visit by making soap in his honor. He visited Peru as part of his Latin America tour. Each soap bar is stamped with Pope Francis’ face and the message “Pope Francis welcome.”
