At SAS, we love asking questions. What we love even more? Going that extra mile to answer those questions. Last year, when the school was thinking of ways to strengthen and make its art program more exciting, a thought came up – “how cool would it be if SAS could provide its students with personal and unlimited access to a living, breathing artist?”
在上海美國學校,我們喜歡提出問題。我們更加喜歡的是什么呢?我們更加喜歡的是努力回答提出的問題。去年,在思考如何增強并讓上海美國學校的藝術項目變得更加令人興奮的時候,一個想法浮出了水面——“要是上海美國學校能夠讓學生與一位活生生的藝術家進行不受限制的交流互動,那該多好???”
Shifting the entire art program to an art gallery or studio downtown was impractical, so the school came up with an even better solution – bringing an artist and his workplace to us instead. And this was how Cory Wanamaker’s Airy Hill Studio at SAS Puxi came to be.
將上海美國學校的整個藝術項目轉到市中心的一個美術館或工作室是不切實際的,因此上海美國學校想出了一個更好的解決方案——讓一位藝術家來到我們這里。由此誕生了上海美國學校浦西校區的Cory Wanamaker’s Airy Hill Studio。
“We asked students at SAS, how many of them had gone to a gallery or a museum, saw a piece they really liked and wondered how the artist made it? Many raised their hands,” said Mr. Wanamaker. “Then we asked, how many of you were able to go right to the next room to talk to the artist? Obviously, no hands went up. Well, how many of you would like that? A large number of hands went up.” This is what SAS’s artist in residence program aims to provide – the opportunity for students to go right to the source of the artwork they see hanging in the studio, and to pick the brains of the creator behind them.
Wanamaker先生表示:“我們向上海美國學校的學生詢問,他們當中有多少人曾經前往美術館或博物館,看到一件他們真正喜歡的藝術品,然后非常好奇藝術家是如何創作這件藝術品的?很多人都舉起了自己的手。我們隨后詢問,你們當中有多少人能夠徑直走到隔壁的房間,與藝術家交流互動?很顯然,沒有一個人舉手。你們當中有多少人希望能夠這樣做呢?很多人都舉起了自己的手?!边@就是上海美國學校藝術家駐場項目的意圖——讓學生有機會與他們在工作室里看到的藝術品背后的藝術家交流互動,向藝術家提出各種各樣的問題。
“I’m here as a form of resource that students can come up and talk to, in person, whenever they want,” explained Mr. Wanamaker. And that includes many other things outside of the creative process itself. “Students can walk in and see and understand all the different facets that go into being an artist, including the business aspect of it – you have to know how to run a business, you have to know how to do your own marketing – things like that.”
Wanamaker先生解釋道:“我來到這里以后,學生隨時可以前來與我交流互動?!苯涣骰拥膬热莅▌撘膺^程以外的其他很多內容。“學生可以前來觀摩了解成為一位藝術家的方方面面,其中包括商業元素——你需要知道如何進行商業運作,你需要知道如何進行自我營銷,諸如此類。”
“It’s similar to the idea of bringing the internet to life. Students can go online to look up information and do their research, or they can walk on down into a living, breathing, working art studio and have the artist answer their questions,” said Mr. Wanamaker. “I’m here as an additional form of resource, another voice that helps strengthen the school’s curriculum.”
Wanamaker先生表示:“這就像互聯網一樣。學生可以上網查看信息,自己做研究。他們也可以走進一個藝術工作室,讓藝術家回答他們的問題。我是又一種資源,又一個聲音,幫助增強上海美國學校的課程設置?!?/p>
