Having fun while learning is important at Shanghai American School, and is one of the many reasons students thrive here. Teachers work hard to find creative ways to inspire a love of learning and sometimes, that means getting drenched in the process!

“The teachers got together to shoot a set of photos as a guide for the Grade 10 Innovation Institute students for a project they would be doing,” said HS EAL teacher Jerry Koontz, who helped take the photos and so had front row seats to the hilarity.
“It’s to help illustrate the photography technique we will be using, and to define the atmosphere of creative risk taking and love of learning we wish for these students to dive into,” HS Visual Arts teacher David Gran explained. “Also to show that we teachers are active participants!”
The project, called “This I Believe”, tasked each student to think of one core belief and an experience in their life that created or solidified that belief, then come up with a statement around that. After they’d teamed up with other students whose beliefs fit a similar theme, they’d set about creating a photo exhibition showcasing each team’s shared statement.
“Their photos must be specific to their own experience, but still have visual consistency. They were also asked to use fast shutter speed photography, the intention being to capture moments that are unrecognizable to the naked eye,” said Mr. Gran. The exercise helped flesh out the idea that sometimes, changes can be subtle.
For their practice run, students were given colorful balls and buckets of water (which they threw at each other with glee!) so they could experiment with how these materials looked when visually suspended. “Later on, when the students start shooting their own photos, they will have more autonomy over the locations and materials they want to use to express their ideas,” said Mr. Gran.
Seriously, throwing water at your teachers in the name of education? Only at SAS.
