Have you always dreamed about going to Oxford?
Not at all! I always believed I would go to an American college, you know, after going to an American school.
Tell us about the visit and interview.
I had to fly in for my interview, and my mother dropped me off at the dorms where I would stay for a week. There was definitely a huge culture shock, and I also met a lot of people. We talked about the interviews and about life, and about academic subjects. That was actually the first time I immersed myself in the environment there, and got to learn more about Oxford. I know I should have done that before applying but I didn’t. The best school is not always the best school for you, but luckily I did love it.
"I think it is important to just be yourself
during the discussion."
The interview wasn’t really an interview. In the UK you are invited for a discussion with the professors. They do the admissions themselves. If I can give a piece of advice, I think it is important to just be yourself during the discussion.
What are you going to study?
My decision to go to the UK was fueled by my decision to study law. At SAS I participated in MUN and that opened my eyes to what legislation meant. In a mock criminal court, I served as a judge in a discussion about genocide.
"At SAS I participated in MUN
and that opened my eyes
to what legislation meant."
What I learned was how international law can be limiting. For example, genocide must occur between two different cultural groups in order to be called a genocide. In this case, the defense’s argument was that the Hutus and the Tutsis were not separate cultural groups, and therefore the law under the definition of genocide did not apply. I saw how a little piece of legislation and the way that words are arranged can corrupt and change a whole case.
That moment in the MUN conference was crazy to me. I did a lot more studying and personal reading after this, and I found a way to integrate it into all my IB assessments. That grew my love more and more. I am lucky that I found a perfect interest that combines my passion for English, jurisdiction, legislation, human rights, and international relations. I don’t want to be a lawyer, I want to help improve legislation and public policy. At least, that is what I think right now. We’ll see where university takes me!
Congratulations, Yun Kei. And congratulations to Oxford—that is one lucky school.
