Collecting like terms
- Expand brackets first!
- TERMS are separated by + or –
- “LIKE” terms must have exactly the same LETTER bit (the NUMBER bit can be different)
- Add the COEFFICIENTS of like terms
Exam Tip
A “Coefficient” answers the question “how many?”For example:
the coefficient of x in 2x2?– 5x + 2 is -5
and:the coefficient of x in ax2?+ bx + c is b
