Every year several languages die out. Some people think that this is not important because life will be easier if there are fewer languages in the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
lesser-known languages / minority?languagesdie out / extinct / disappear / (not) existdefunct / obsolete
Every year some lesser-known languages disappear, and the pace has been noticeably accelerated over the past few decades because of the almost omnipresent globalization and the remarkable advancement of cyber technology. Views of how to respond to this phenomenon appear to be divisive. Those who think the disappearing of some languages every year is unimportant consider that it is helpful to facilitate communication between different people hailing from various cultural backgrounds. This is because fewer language barriers will exist in the real communication.
For example, in loads of places and social spheres, English has become a lingua franca, which makes life really much easier.?People are? also widely connected by the Internet, and a communal language is absolutely essential in this regard. Plus, we do not have to be involved in a large number of arduous and disturbing tasks of acquiring other languages when we are going to travel abroad or read some original books written in foreign languages unknown to us. On top of that, many conflicts resulting from misunderstanding in communication between different languages will not be inevitable any more.
There are some people do not agree with the ideas mentioned above, insisting that many languages becoming extinct means the language diversity is decreasing, and then some cultures based on the disappeared or disappearing languages will probably be obsolete and defunct or be heavily endangered at least. To get a kick out of cultural distinctions will not be that easy like before, and the odds against this ever happening are high. In addition, to some extent, some world-renowned classics authored by the people whose mother tongue does not exist now will not possibly make sense to us. Furthermore, an increasing number of people will lose their cultural identity if their languages disappear. Then, these people tend to slip into a quandary due to the lack of a sense of cultural belonging. In my view, it is necessary to raise the public awareness of protecting the endangered languages, especially among the younger generations.
Most languages die out gradually as successive generations of speakers become bilingual and then begin to lose proficiency in their traditional languages.?This often happens when speakers seek to learn a more prestigious language in order to gain social and economic advantages or to avoid discrimination. The gradual disappearance of Coptic as a spoken language in Egypt following the rise of Arabic in the 7th century is one example of this type of transition. Modernity and globalization have strengthened these forces, and peoples around the world now face unprecedented pressure to adopt the common languages used in government, commerce, technology, entertainment, and diplomacy.?How would it feel to be the last person on Earth who speaks your language? For those of us whose native languages have millions of speakers, it's almost impossible to imagine. Linguists estimate that of the world's approximately 6,900 languages, more than half are at risk of dying out by the end of the 21st century. Language extinction tends to render many people sad as it is much harder to unravel some unknowns of some minority languages.
