Aditi Babel ’14 is a medical student in the UKwith an MSc in Genomic Medicine.
But wait, there’s more. She isalsoan avid writer, a published poet, and recreational singer-songwriter. Aditi is an inspiring alumna who embraces that humans are layered and need balance, and that we actualize our potential by embracing our whole selves. As she launches her new book of poetry, "Unsettled",she also helps us kick off a WeChat series where we celebrate our multi-faceted students at SAS.
SAS: What are some of the challenges in being a strong, multi-faceted person in today’s world?
AB: In this era of personal branding, we tend to filter any activities or interests that do not fit the narrative we have curated, and we may be reluctant to participate in or publicly acknowledge our involvement with any pursuits that may be perceived as incompatible with our professional profile. (In my case, I worried that publishing a seemingly emotional poetry book could be used to question my credibility as a rational doctor.) We must embrace that as humans we are multi-dimensional with varied interests, multiple stories, and boundless capacity to learn. There is so much to gain from engaging in seemingly contradicting disciplines.
SAS: How did your education at SAS play a role in preparing you for life and for developing your whole self?
AB:The focus on academic rigor at SAS was a blessing in disguise: it has prepared me well for medical school where academic excellence truly is non-negotiable. I feel I am now able to strive academically without compromising my other interests. Also, theIB programme always served to affirm the value and importance of engaging in multi-disciplinary education and activity. Thriving in the IB diploma meant balancing it all: science, language, mathematics, the arts, epistemology, research, and extensive extra-curricular activity.
SAS: Are there ways you think being a poet impacts being a doctor, or vice versa?
AB: In my personal experience, whether I am on placement or studying for exams, being a medical student can be physically and emotionally strenuous. Having a healthy outlet is essential in alleviating stress and maintaining sanity: although for me this has been creative writing, I know some of my peers derive the same benefits from long-distance running and meditation.
Poetry specifically cultivates introspection, mindfulness, and empathy: all extremely important qualities for a doctor. Primarily studying medicine has meant that writing poems is not something I am forced to do, and there is no pressure from instructions I must follow or quotas I must meet. This allows me the luxury of time; I can write poems as I feel the need to write them, and choose to share them when I feel they are ready.

SAS: What advice would you give to SAS students today?
AB:Embrace all the facets of your skills and interests. We are all multi-dimensional humans with multiple stories, and I truly believe life is too short not to share our creative work. Each discipline can teach us different lessons, and there is magic at the intersection of art and science. We have grown up hearing that we can be absolutely anything we want to be, but I think the truer statement is that we can be absolutely anything wework towards.
