Q: Why did you decide to be an art teacher?問：你為什么決定成為一名藝術(shù)老師？

A:I liked being a student. In my elementary school, my teacher once said that I would become a good teacher. That sentence was always at the back of my mind. Later in my life, I went to university, and I forgot what it was I wanted to major in. But I really liked all of the artistic subjects, such as languages. I ended up getting a degree in psychology. At that period of time, I was also a singer in a band. Then, my parents told me I should get a real job. At the same time, my brother’s wife was a teacher, so I thought I could get a teaching degree within about a year, if I put effort in the subjects. Being a teacher was actually a cool thing.答：我總能回想起自己做學(xué)生的時(shí)候。在我小學(xué)的時(shí)候，我的老師曾告訴過我，我會(huì)成為一名很好的老師，那句話我一直記在腦海里。之后我上了大學(xué)，卻不知道自己想要學(xué)什么。但是我真的很喜歡所有有關(guān)藝術(shù)的科目，例如語言。最后我拿到了心理學(xué)的學(xué)位。在那段時(shí)間里，我成為了一個(gè)樂隊(duì)里的歌手，但隨后我的父母告訴我，我應(yīng)該去找一份真正的工作。那時(shí)我弟弟的妻子是一名老師，所以我想如果我在這些學(xué)科上花些功夫的話，我應(yīng)該可以在一年之內(nèi)可以拿到教育學(xué)的學(xué)位。當(dāng)一名老師其實(shí)挺酷的。

Q: Was art you favorite subject when you were a kid?問：當(dāng)你是孩子的時(shí)候，藝術(shù)是你最喜歡的科目嗎？

A: Actually I loved art, but I was really nervous in art class, because when I went to school, we sat beside each other and had to do the same thing, and the one who sat beside me would be like, “This is what I can do best,” and so it gives us a stressful experience. So I didn’t enjoy how art was taught, so that is why I do not teach art that way. I try to let everyone find their own thing and enjoy themselves instead of competing with one another. I was a pretty good student on every subject except for Math.答：其實(shí)我很喜歡藝術(shù)，但是那時(shí)候我上藝術(shù)課卻總是感到很有壓力、很緊張。那時(shí)我要和其它同學(xué)坐在一起做同樣的作品，而坐在我旁邊的人總是會(huì)說：“這就是我能做到的，我最多只能做這么好……”，這使得我們的課上總有一種緊張的氛圍。所以當(dāng)時(shí)的我不太喜歡藝術(shù)，因此，我的教學(xué)不會(huì)給學(xué)生太多的壓力。在我的課堂上，我會(huì)試著讓每個(gè)學(xué)生做出他們自己想做的作品，發(fā)揮他們自己的想象力，而不是做同樣的作品，看誰做得更好。除了數(shù)學(xué)，我在其它科目上都是優(yōu)等生。

Q: Did you have talent in art, or did you just like art?問:你在藝術(shù)上有天賦嗎？還是只是單純的喜歡？

A:I always loved to draw people’s faces. Many times, when I made an art piece, it was usually a portrait. I drew portraits that were realistic, but also kind of weird at the same time. I wanted to relate the piece of art to history, as well as show the person’s personality. My artworks were fun, but real. I would say I had some skills in art, and I was always fascinated with art and history too. I loved my art/history courses at university. As a student, I was often doodling in my classes while my teacher talked, because I probably have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or something, and needed something to do. Q: Is FDIS your first school to teach at?問:FDIS是你執(zhí)教的第一所學(xué)校嗎?

A: No, I started in the interior of Taiwan. Then I went to Brazil, Lebanon, Turkey and Japan. After that I went to Molenbeek (Belgium), and China. I travelled everywhere, almost.答：不是，我的教育生涯是從臺(tái)灣內(nèi)陸開始的。然后我去了巴西、黎巴嫩、土耳其和日本。之后我去了莫倫貝克(比利時(shí))，來到了中國。可以說我是在到處旅行。

Q: Why did you come to FDIS?問：你為什么來復(fù)旦附中國際部?

A: I came to FDIS because I had heard good things about Fudan University and FDIS. I always liked to communicate with students. I did a demonstration class here; I was impressed by the students’ ability to speak English. In another school in Shanghai, the students had a less fluid ability in speaking English. That’s why I chose FDIS. I thought teaching in FDIS would be a rich experience for me and the students, too.答：我來復(fù)旦附中國際部是因?yàn)閺?fù)旦大學(xué)和復(fù)旦附中國際部聲名在外。我總是喜歡和學(xué)生交流。我曾在這里上過一堂演示課，上課時(shí)，這里學(xué)生的英語口頭表達(dá)能力給我留下了深刻的印象；而在上海的另一所學(xué)校，他們的表達(dá)能力遠(yuǎn)不如這里的學(xué)生。這就是為什么我選擇了復(fù)旦附中國際部。我認(rèn)為在復(fù)旦附中國際部教書對(duì)我和我的學(xué)生來說都會(huì)成為豐富而難忘的經(jīng)歷。

Q: How can you influence the students that were not interested in art?問：你如何感染對(duì)藝術(shù)不感興趣的學(xué)生？

A: If a student doesn’t like art, I would try to find something that the student is interested in. I believed that everyone has interests in art, because art is strong and wide communication. I try to relate one’s potential in some area of art and bring it out, even if he/she is not skilled in art. The skill would be an easy and technical thing to learn. Q: What do you do if a student is too active in your art class?問：如果學(xué)生在藝術(shù)課上過于活躍，你會(huì)怎么做？

A: I don’t mind a bit of freedom. I’ve worked in Japan and the students didn’t talk at all. They were totally silent throughout the whole class and it kind of freaked me out. It made me nervous. It was like talking to myself as I was teaching and it made me uncomfortable. So I actually enjoy when the students are chatting. I do have high expectations for the product though. If students can enjoy themselves while making art, I’m happy, as long as they're working. If a student gets too out of control, or disrespectful to other students, that bothers me, and art is a passion of mine, so I get really hurt, personally, if someone is rude or disrespectful to art or to the other students in the art class.答：我不介意讓他們自由一些。我在日本工作過，那兒的學(xué)生們根本沒有話說，整個(gè)班級(jí)都十分沉默，這讓我擔(dān)憂、緊張，仿佛我教學(xué)時(shí)是在自言自語，這讓我感到不舒服。我真的很喜歡學(xué)生們聊天，我確實(shí)對(duì)學(xué)生們的藝術(shù)作品寄予厚望，但如果學(xué)生在創(chuàng)作藝術(shù)的同時(shí)可以盡情享受，我會(huì)更為高興。如果一個(gè)學(xué)生自由太過，或者不尊重其他學(xué)生，那會(huì)困擾到我。藝術(shù)就是我的熱情，所以如果有人對(duì)藝術(shù)或?qū)Τ两谒囆g(shù)中的其他學(xué)生不禮貌或不尊重，我會(huì)非常傷心。

Q: How or why do you recommend/encourage students to learn art?問：你為什么鼓勵(lì)學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)藝術(shù)？你是如何鼓勵(lì)他們的？

A: To me, art is a really sophisticated means of communication; no animals do art, only human beings. Art's a unique thing and it’s a thing that indicates that we have higher intelligence. So to me, smart people do art and I think you will become smarter when you are doing art. So if you do well in any subject (Science, English, and even Math), it becomes an art, so everything at a high level is art. If we can start people at the ground level of actually creating artwork and appreciating knowing what beauty is and what they find beautiful, then it can translate to everything.答：對(duì)我來說，藝術(shù)是一種非常復(fù)雜的交流方式，只有人類懂得欣賞藝術(shù),而動(dòng)物卻不懂。藝術(shù)是一種十分獨(dú)特的存在，它可以體現(xiàn)出人類的智慧。所以對(duì)于我來說，聰明的人藝術(shù)感都不會(huì)差。并且我認(rèn)為當(dāng)人在做與藝術(shù)有關(guān)的事時(shí)，他/她會(huì)變得更聰明。所以，如果你能在某一學(xué)科，如科學(xué)，英語，甚至數(shù)學(xué)等上都做得很好，那么其實(shí)你也擅長藝術(shù)。所有高水準(zhǔn)的東西其實(shí)都含有藝術(shù)成分。如果我們從入門的水平開始創(chuàng)作藝術(shù)，并且能夠欣賞什么是美，擁有發(fā)現(xiàn)美的能力，那么你會(huì)發(fā)現(xiàn)，一切都是藝術(shù)，藝術(shù)就是一切。
