1928年,弗吉尼亞·伍爾夫(Virginia Woolf)在紐納姆藝術協會(Newnham Arts Society)就“Women and Fiction"這一主題發(fā)表演講,從這次演講中出現了她的開創(chuàng)性著作《一個人的房間》(A Room of One's Own)。紐納姆為它在教育史上的地位感到非常自豪。
A Room of One's Own提出了許多關于女性在社會,文化和教育中的地位的問題,比賽允許學生思考這些主題和想法,同時發(fā)展對大學水平學習至關重要的獨立研究和寫作技能。這項競賽可能適合那些對學習英國文學、歷史、政治、哲學或社會學特別感興趣的同學;但我們歡迎有興趣的學生參加任何科目的組合。
強烈建議學生在回答這些問題之前先閱讀Virginia Woolf的開創(chuàng)性著作《一間自己的房間》(A Room of One's Own)。
了解賽事詳情參賽者提交的文章需要回答所給問題中任何一個問題,字數應在 1,500 到 2,500 字之間(包括腳注和標題)。

2024年
1) “It was absurd to blame any class or any sex, as a whole. Great bodies of people are never responsible for what they do.”
Evaluate the role of the individual and the collective in the emancipation of groups facing oppression, using at least two detailed examples.
2) “That woman, then, who was born with a gift of poetry in the sixteenth century, was an unhappy woman, a woman at strife against herself.”
Compare and contrast the historical and contemporary challenges faced by female authors.*
3) “For genius like Shakespeare's is not born among labouring, uneducated, servile people. […] It is not born to-day among the working classes.”
Investigate the role of class in the journey to becoming a writer.*
*Any detailed examples used should not be core A-level or IB texts
2023年
1) “She had to work on equal terms with men. She made, by working very hard, enough to live ?on. The importance of that fact outweighs anything that she actually wrote, […]”.
Discuss the significance of the struggle for financial independence and equality on the place of ?women in academia or any other profession, either historical or contemporary.
2) “It would be a thousand pities if women wrote like men […] considering the vastness and ?variety of the world, how should we manage with one [sex] only?”
Using at least two examples, discuss the impact and value of the voices of women and/or gender non-conforming individuals to the literary world.
3) “The history of men's opposition to women's emancipation is more interesting perhaps than ?the story of that emancipation itself”.
Analyse the role and responsibility of men in combatting gender inequality in a specific place and ?historical period.
